Setting up a VPN connection on macOS
Please email the IT Helpdesk, asking for your VPN Credentials if you have not received those yet. (service@wellcomww.com)
Once you have the credentials, you can follow these steps in order to add the VPN to your machine:
- Click on System Preferences
- Click on Network
- Click on the + Icon, in the bottom left (Red Arrow – Fig 1)
- Click on the Interface dropdown, and select 'VPN'
- Click on ‘VPN Type’ and select ‘L2TP over IPSec’
- Change the Service Name to ‘Wellcom VPN'
- Click ‘Create’
- Once created, enter the Server Address and Account Name (supplied by email by the IT Team) (Orange Box – Fig 1)
- Click 'Authentication Settings...' (Green Arrow – Fig 1) and enter your Password (given to you by the IT Team)
- Enter the Shared Secret (supplied by the IT Team. Click ‘OK’
- Click on 'Advanced' (Blue Arrow – Fig 1).

12. When on the ‘Options’ tab, under ‘Sessions Options’ (Orange Box – Fig 2), ensure the tick boxes are checked on for:
- Disconnect when switching user accounts
- Disconnect when user logs out
- Send all traffic over VPN connection
13. Then click ‘OK’

14. Make sure you click on the Cog Button at the bottom left of the Network window and click on 'Set Service Order' (Red Arrow – Fig
3). From there, you'll need to drag the Wellcom VPN to the top of
the list (Red Arrow – Fig 4) and click 'OK'

15. Click on the Tick Box for 'Show VPN Status in Menu Bar' (Purple Arrow – Fig 1) - This allows you to turn your VPN on and off via the Toolbar on the top of your screen
16. Test it works by clicking 'Apply' and then clicking 'Connect'.
(NOTE: YOU CAN NOT CONNECT TO THE VPN WHILST ON A
WELLCOM NETWORK)
Connection Instructions
To connect to the Wellcom VPN, you’ll need to follow these steps:
1. Click the VPN Icon (top of the toolbar on your machine)
2. Click ‘Show Time Connected’ and ‘Show Status While Connected’ – This will allow you to know when you are connected to the VPN
3. Click ‘Connect Wellcom VPN’
4. Wait for the timer to start. This indicates that the VPN connection is
successful.
When you need to disconnect from the Wellcom VPN, please follow the below steps:
1. Click the VPN Icon (top of the toolbar on your machine)
2. Click ‘Disconnect Wellcom VPN’
3. Wait for the timer to disappear. This will indicate that the VPN
connection has ended.
